Sisters In Arms Organization (SIAO)
Sisters in Arms Organization (SIAO) has its roots deeply embedded in the rich cultural heritage of Guyana's hinterland regions. Founded in 2021 by a group of visionary women from these regions, SIAO was born out of a shared passion for uplifting their communities and addressing the unique challenges faced by their people. These women, hailing from different parts of Guyana’s interior, had experienced firsthand the barriers to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities that their communities endured. They were driven by a desire to create change and to ensure that future generations would have access to the resources and opportunities that had been so scarce in their own lives.
The founders of SIAO were not only aware of the struggles within their communities but were also armed with the knowledge and skills needed to effect change. Many of them had pursued higher education and gained valuable experience in various fields such as business, healthcare, and education. Their diverse backgrounds and shared commitment to their people became the foundation upon which SIAO was built.
In its early days, SIAO operated with limited resources but an abundance of determination. The organization began by conducting small-scale hamper distributions and other initiatives in remote villages, often using personal funds to support these efforts. Despite the challenges, the founders were unwavering in their mission to empower the women and children in their communities.
Over time, SIAO's impact began to grow. The organization started gaining recognition, not just within the local communities but also on a national level. Through these small scale projects, SIAO was able to expand its programs and reach more communities
In January 2024, a significant milestone was achieved when SIAO was annexed by RigPro, a leading corporate entity in the oil and gas sector in Guyana. This merger was a strategic decision that aligned with the visions of both organizations. For RigPro, this partnership was an opportunity to extend its corporate social responsibility initiatives and contribute to the sustainable development of the hinterland regions. For SIAO, the annexation provided access to resources, expertise, and networks that were previously beyond reach.
This merger marked a new chapter in SIAO’s history. With RigPro’s support, SIAO was able to scale up its operations, introducing more comprehensive programs in education, healthcare, and vocational training. The partnership enables SIAO to strive to launch advocacy campaigns on a larger scale, raising awareness about the challenges faced by indigenous communities and pushing for policy changes that would benefit these communities.
Despite the organizational growth and increased resources, SIAO has remained true to its roots. The organization continues to be led by indigenous women who understand the cultural nuances and needs of the communities they serve. The founders of SIAO, all of whom are still actively involved, ensure that the organization’s initiatives are culturally sensitive and community-driven.
Today, SIAO stands as a testament to what can be achieved when passion meets purpose. It is a symbol of resilience, unity, and hope for the indigenous people of Guyana’s hinterland regions. While the journey has been challenging, the organization’s history is a story of empowerment, collaboration, and unwavering commitment to social justice. As SIAO continues to grow and evolve, it remains dedicated to its mission of empowering the indigenous communities of Guyana, ensuring that they have the tools, knowledge, and opportunities to build a better future.
SIAO is committed to empowering indigenous people, particularly women and children, in Guyana's hinterland regions through education, healthcare, and skill development. Founded in 2021, SIAO bridges the gap between these communities and essential resources, ensuring sustainable growth and prosperity.
